COSCO ballast water management
Ballast water is the term referring to the fresh or saline water kept in ballast tanks on-board for creating a weight balance. For every ship, a certain weight should be maintained to ensure its balance in the sea, whether it is transporting cargo between ports or it is experiencing harsh conditions in the sea.
Ballast water pumps are used for discharging or importing ballast water into the ship. In some cases, the ship needs an extra load for keeping a good balance. There are other times that the vessel is carrying heavy cargo and should lose some of it to prevent sinking into the water. Ballast water pumps provide the needed power for ballast water transferring.
COSCO shipbuilding industry together with The Blue Ocean Shield (BOS) ballast water management have taken this need into account and released the product line of ballast water pumps. In addition to physical filtration, this pump uses ultra-violet radiation to further purify the ballast water by medium pressure. The COSCO pump holds the following approvals:
DNV-GL, CCS, BV, LR, ABS, KR, RINA, RS, USCG, and IMO G8
Treatment capacity rate ranges from 100 to 3200 m3/hour.
As all the ballast pumps, this one takes two steps in its function. The first is filtration to eliminate particular matter (PM) and the planktons larger than 50 micrometers. The second stage in these pumps includes the flow of ballast water into UV reactor. The radiation kills almost all the bacteria and viruses effectively.
